Speaking about colors, here are some colors dyed straight into the canvas. Helen Frankenthaler was one of the early, and female, pioneers of abstract expressionism, and she passed away this week at age 83. Good WSJ and NY Times articles on her career.

Helen led a good and long life; it's nice to see people celebrate that.

I was friends with Grace Hartigan, one of Helen's contemporaries. Grace told me about the times they lived in, the crazy characters they knew (e.g., John Bernard Myers), and how heavy their drinking was back then. From that last bit, it's a surprise that some of them lived into old age.
